Understanding the Ledger Live Password
The Ledger Live password protects your app data on your computer or mobile device. It prevents unauthorized users from viewing balances or accessing the Ledger Live interface without your consent. Your password does not protect your crypto assets directly — your hardware wallet and recovery phrase do that. However, keeping it secure maintains your privacy and account organization.
When You Might Need to Reset It
- You’ve forgotten your Ledger Live password and can’t log in.
- You want to change the password after sharing your device or computer.
- You’re reinstalling Ledger Live or migrating to a new computer.
How to Reset Your Ledger Live Password (Desktop)
- Close Ledger Live if it’s running.
- Navigate to the Ledger Live data folder:
- Windows: Press Windows + R, type
%AppData%\Ledger Live - macOS: Open Finder → Go → Go to Folder and enter
~/Library/Application Support/Ledger Live - Linux: Open
~/.config/Ledger Live
- Windows: Press Windows + R, type
- Locate and delete the file named settings.json. This removes your local password configuration.
- Restart Ledger Live. The app will start fresh and prompt you to create a new password.
- Reconnect your Ledger device and re-add your accounts. All blockchain data remains on the blockchain, so balances will reappear after syncing.
Resetting on Mobile (iOS / Android)
- Open Settings → Applications → Ledger Live on your phone.
- Tap Clear Data or Reset App (depending on your OS).
- Reopen Ledger Live and set a new password when prompted.
- Pair your Ledger device again via Bluetooth (Nano X) or USB if supported.
Important Security Reminders
The recovery phrase is the master key to your assets and must remain offline at all times. Ledger will never ask for it via email, social media, or phone support. After resetting the password, verify all account balances by reconnecting your hardware wallet to ensure integrity.
